Measuring the pH

pH is the acidity of something. 6.5-8.5 is the usual pH of water, though 7.5 is the rough usual pH. Here, we test that pH.

  • The maximum pH recorded in the past has been 8.5 in 2022, and before that, the pH ranged from 7.8 to 8.4. However, we have recorded a pH of 9.2 in section 5, which is significantly higher.

  • In these conditions fish must be really challenged to survive, especially younger fish, and breeding could be impossible for some species. These pH levels, killing fish, are also killing the ecosystem.

  • Climate change occurs because of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Water from the oceans and rivers absorbs the greenhouse gasses and becomes more acidic.
